Please read this carefully and completely before proceeding.
For several decades, the World of Darkness has explored the darkness in the real world through the lens of horror storytelling. It has addressed sexual violence, political extremism, exploitation, surveillance, systemic abuse, religious fanaticism, and many other difficult subjects — not to celebrate them, but to examine them.
We believe that exploration of these subjects in collaborative fiction is as valid and as meaningful as it is in literature, film, or any other storytelling medium. Including a difficult subject in a story is not the same as glorifying it. Approached with care and honesty, it can be the opposite — a way to understand the problems we face so we are better equipped to confront them.
Requiem by Night continues in that tradition. This is a chronicle about survival in a universe where monsters are real in every shape and form imaginable. The stories told here may include references to or implications of:
- Sexual violence and predation
- Physical violence and graphic injury
- Psychological and emotional abuse
- Torture and imprisonment
- Mind control and loss of autonomy
- Drug use and addiction
- Political extremism and authoritarianism
- Racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination
- Religious fanaticism and exploitation of faith
Most scenarios will not be graphically explicit. The implications of these subjects, however, are present in the world and will surface in stories told here. That is the nature of this genre, and it is something every player should understand before they begin.
Why Are We Telling You This?
Because someone reading this is new to this genre.
Because someone has lived through one or more of these experiences in real life.
Because someone deserves to know what they are stepping into.
We want our players to know that we are aware of the weight these subjects carry. We ask that you carry that awareness with you into every scene you participate in.
This is not a license to use dark themes as a weapon against other players. It is not permission to violate, manipulate, or override the story another player is telling. It is not an excuse.
It is a promise — from us to you — that we know this content is real, and that we take seriously the responsibility of creating a space where it can be explored with honesty and with care.
If at any time a scene becomes too much, you are always within your rights to step away. Do so respectfully, and know that no reasonable person will judge you for it.
A Final Word
This is a story and a game about monsters. Please do not use it as an excuse to be one.
You must be 18 years of age or older to participate in Requiem by Night. By continuing, you confirm that you are of legal age and that you have read and understood this warning.
The best stories come from understanding darkness — not from living in it.
