Rules of Engagement

The Sim

The guidelines that keep this a good place for everyone.

These rules exist because we want Requiem by Night to be a space where great stories are told and where every player feels safe, respected, and genuinely welcome. They are not designed to intimidate or restrict you — they are designed to protect the experience we are all here to have together.

Please read them fully. Most of them are common sense. All of them matter.

Second Life Terms of Service

All Second Life Terms of Service and Community Standards apply at all times on this sim. Violations are bannable offenses — not just by us, but by Linden Lab. If you need a refresher on what you agreed to when you created your account, visit secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php. We will not debate this. When you created your Second Life account, you agreed to these terms.

The Rules

1. Be an Adult. You must be 18 years of age or older to play here. This is a legal requirement, not a preference. Requiem by Night is an adult roleplay environment with mature themes. If you are not of legal age, this is not the right space for you.

2. Respect Every Player. We do not expect everyone to like each other. We do expect everyone to treat each other with basic courtesy and civility, both in character and out of character. OOC disrespect, harassment, and personal attacks are not acceptable here. Your character can be cruel. You cannot. If conflict arises between players, bring it to a staff member rather than escalating it publicly.

3. Keep IC and OOC Separate. What happens to your character in a scene is not happening to you. What you feel about another player's character is not how you treat that player as a person. If you find yourself unable to separate the two, step away from the scene and reach out to a Mentor or Admin.

4. No Metagaming. Metagaming is using knowledge your character could not realistically possess — information you learned out of character, from another player's Discord post, or from a scene your character was not present for. Play what your character knows, not what you know.

5. No Powergaming or Godmoding. Powergaming means giving your character abilities or advantages that are unfair to other players. Godmoding means taking control of another player's character without their consent. Both deny other players their own agency in the story. Your character sheet and the dice system exist to resolve these situations fairly — use them.

6. No Metered Combat Systems. External combat meters — CCS, DCS, Spellfire, Unity, Gorean Meters, or any similar system — are not permitted on this sim. Our default combat system is built into the sim HUD, which also includes a titler and chatter function.

7. No Magic Visual HUDs. Scripted magic HUDs that rez prims, particles, or visual effects are not permitted. This is about accessibility — a number of players in Second Life experience photosensitivity, and we will not risk a medical emergency. Weapon attachments with scripted effects are fine; HUDs producing environmental particle effects are not.

8. Respect Private Spaces. Private homes, faction headquarters, and locked areas are locked for a reason. Sit-hacking, teleporting into, or otherwise entering a space you have not been invited into is a violation of privacy and of this community's trust. This applies in-world and to private Discord channels alike.

9. No Griefing, Trolling, or Disruption. Deliberately disrupting the experience of other players — through harassment, repetitive provocation, unsolicited intrusion into scenes, or any other disruptive behavior — is a violation of Second Life Community Standards and of this community's values.

10. Free-Form Combat Is an Agreement, Not a Right. Players may choose Free-Form Combat (FFC) instead of the default system, but only if all parties explicitly agree in advance. If a dispute arises during FFC, staff will not adjudicate it — you'll be directed to the default system, or the scene ends.

A Note on Consequences

We want to be direct with you about how we handle rule violations, because clarity is kinder than ambiguity.

Situation What Happens
First instance (most violations) A staff member will speak with you. You'll be given the opportunity to correct the behavior. Most situations end here.
Repeated or escalating behavior A formal warning is issued and documented. Further escalation results in a temporary or permanent ban depending on severity.
Immediate permanent ban Harassment, ToS violations, griefing, abuse of players using real-world vulnerabilities, or false accusations intended to harm another player. These do not receive warnings.
Linden Lab reports ToS violations and harassment that meet the threshold for abuse reporting will be reported to Linden Lab in addition to our internal action.

Appeals: If you believe a staff decision was made in error, you may appeal directly to a Sim Owner. Appeals must be made calmly and in good faith. Debating or demanding reversal of a ruling in public will not result in reconsideration — it will result in confirmation of the original decision.

The Golden Rule

Have fun making beautiful stories with one another.

Follow the ten rules above and everything will be fine. If you have questions about any of these rules, reach out to a Mentor or Admin — we would rather answer a question now than deal with a misunderstanding later.

We are glad you are here. Go make something worth remembering.
